Nagoya University- Dr. Kasahara

My name is James Fernandez and I had the incredible opportunity of spending a summer in Japan conducting research in Prof. Kasahara’s RDE lab at Nagoya University. Through this experience I became friends with both members of the lab and fellow students that were a part of the JUACEP abroad program alongside me.

In Dr. Kasahara’s lab I was helped by several people to conduct an experiment on the synchronization of dual RDEs with straight and diverging nozzles. Some of the students that helped me were Allen Chan, Sawada Satoru, and my TA Yamada Soa. This was my first experience with physical experimentation and it was an honor to be able to run tests in such an established lab.

Outside of the lab, I also was given the opportunity to be a part of an engine assembly workshop where we were able to construct and test our own engines alongside our TAs and trained professionals. Outside of my time in Nagoya, I was very fortunate to be able to explore all of the beauty and fun Japan had to offer. My favorite places were Tokyo, Nara Park, and Osaka.
